Drink now cellar for up to 9 years. No need to decant before serving. Mauro was founded by Mariano García who worked at the legendary Vega Sicilia winery for thirty years as technical manager. The winery is located in Ribera del Duero which is best known for its excellent red wines made from Spain’s classic Tempranillo variety. This bottling is crafted with fruit from Tudela de Duero and Traspinedo where the vines are planted on limestone and clay soils and a small amount of Syrah mixed into the cuvee to add complexity and body. The grapes are vinified separately by variety and vineyard to give Mariano maximum control over the final composition of the blend. The young wine is then aged in French and American oak barrels for 16 months, polishing and harmonising the different components into a richly-layered and classic-style Spanish red. The nose opens with seductive notes of dark plum, cassis and blackberry while the first sip reveals a generous full body, silky smooth texture and well-developed tannins. The long, refined finish is seasoned with hints of cigar box and sweet spice from the oak and the bold flavour profile makes this a great match for rich Spanish charcuterie or hearty tomato-based pasta dishes.

Bodegas Mauro San Roman 2021 Bodegas Mauro San Roman 2021 43.54 GBP Cellar for up to 8 years No need to decant before serving. This stunning wine from the up-and-coming Spanish region of Toro is crafted by talented winemaker Mariano García who served for three decades as technical director at the legendary Vega Sicilia estate in Ribera del Duero. Toro has long been overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbour, Ribera del Duero, but now thanks to the hard work of Mariano and others the region is producing some of Spain’s most exciting powerful red wines from the Tempranillo grape. In Toro the variety is known locally as Tinta de Toro and it thrives here in the tough continental climate with very hot summers and freezing winters. This bottling is crafted from 45 year old vines which are planted at 750 metres above sea level on a mixture of sandy and stony soils. In the winery Mariano vinifies each plot individually to give him maximum control over the finished bottling. The young wine is then aged in French and American oak barrels for 24 months. The result is a powerful, richly concentrated wine with ample dark berry and plum character which linger long on the nose and palate. The first sip is rewarded with a very smooth texture, fine tannins and a muscular structure which will respond well to several years more of cellaring.
Bodegas Mauro Mauro VS 2021 Bodegas Mauro Mauro VS 2021 82.01 GBP Cellar for up to 15 years. No need to decant before serving. Mariano García served as technical manager for thirty years at the world-famous Vega Sicilia winery in Ribera del Duero before beginning his own project in Tudela de Duero just 19 km north of Madrid. The region is one of Spain’s most important wine producers and is known for its full-flavoured red wines made from the classic Tempranillo grape. In total the estate has 80 hectares of vines in Tudela de Duero and Santibáñez de Valcorba where conditions are ideal for making full bodied reds thanks to the hot sunny days and cool nights which help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. This bottling is made from the very best grapes from the estate sourced from old vines with the young wine aged in French and American oak for 32 months. This extended ageing creates a multi-layered and intense flavour profile with smooth tannins and a well-developed structure which will respond very well to cellaring for at least another decade or so. The nose opens with bold dark fruit along with hints of cigar box spice, vanilla and toast while the first sip reveals a generous full body, very smooth entry and long, lingering dark berry flavours.

No need to decant, but best to open it half an hour before service. Founded in the 1980s, Bodegas Valdemar is a Rioja winery with a much longer family history dating back to 1889. Today, at the fifth generation of the Martinez Bujanda family, the winery is recognized as one of the most prestigious in Spain, with over 300 hectares spread across the Rioja appellation. The Viura grapes are sourced from the Finca Alto Cantabria Singular vineyard, planted in 1975 and located at an altitude of 114 meters above the Ebro River. Here, the calcareous, sandy-loam soil, the slope, and good ventilation provide ideal conditions for growing white grape varieties. After manual harvesting, fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in French oak. The finished wine then ages on the lees for 6 months. Founded in 2005 by Rodrigo Mendez and oenologist Raul Perez, Forjas del Salnes is widely considered one of the most exciting and innovative realities in Galicia. From the beginning, Forjas, which grows organically, has worked with the main objective of recovering ancient Galician varieties that had been abandoned and lost over the centuries and producing Albarino from old vines. Their wines are clear proof of their philosophy and reflection of the terroir: full of freshness, with perfect minerality, ample sensations, and a surprising aging potential. Goliardo A Telleira is produced from Albarino grapes from 45-year-old vines located close to the coast. Alcoholic fermentation and aging take place in large used barrels of 750 liters. After 12 months in wood, the wine is bottled and immersed in special cages 30 meters deep in the sea, where it is left to age for another 3 months. The wine has a powerful and expressive nose of ripe stone fruit, delicate spices, floral and mineral notes. In the mouth, it shows all its complexity and aging potential. It is creamy and structured, deep and mineral, with a strong saline character and remarkable acidity. This is a wine that can improve with a few years in the cellar. Serve at 9º to 12ºC. Colome Estate Malbec 2023 Colome Estate Malbec 2023 21.36 GBP Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant before serving. One of the oldest and highest altitude wineries in Argentina, the remarkable Bodega Colome is tucked away in the Calchaquí Valleys in the desert-like region of Salta in the far north-west of the country. The harsh, arid conditions and elevation make this one of the most unique places to make wine, giving Colome’s stunning Malbec wines a distinctive personality which sets them apart from Argentina’s typical style of red wines. To create this cuvee the winemaking team combine fruit from four different vineyards. The highest is Altura Maxima which sits at 3100 metres above sea level and adds delicate dried violet notes and finely-grained tannins. The lowest vineyard is La Brava at 1700 metres which tends to produce intensely ripe and full-flavoured berries. Following vinification the young wine is aged in French oak barrels for 15 months to fully integrate the different components. Succulent notes of cassis, blackberry and dark cherry dominate on the nose while the first sip reveals a robust full body, smooth yet firm tannins, and a long, complex finish with plenty of spice from the oak. The easy-going nature of this red makes it a great option to enjoy with family and friends alongside a casual dinner of ribs or steak.
Aalto PS 2023 Aalto PS 2023 93.81 GBP Cellar for up to 15 years. Decant 1 hour before serving. This sensational Tinta Fina from Ribera del Duero is the handiwork of Mariano Garcia who worked for some 30 years at Bodegas Vega Sicilia as winemaker and technical director. Mariano teamed up with the well-known wine business management consultant Javier Zaccagnini to found a brand-new project, Aalto, in the late 1990s. The winery now has 32 hectares of vineyards which have been planted with carefully-selected old clones as well as using older vineyards scattered across the Burgos province. Their iconic wine is the Aalto PS or Private Selection which is only made during the very finest vintages. Such is the attention to detail that the grapes undergo a rigorous multi-step selection process to distinguish the best fruit. Following vinification the wine is aged in top quality French oak barrels for 20 months before bottling. The result is a truly remarkable wine that regularly receives scores in the high 90s from the likes of Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate. Packed with opulent fruit, firm tannins, and a well-developed structure, this is a uniquely beautiful Ribera del Duero wine which will age extremely well in the cellar over the next 10-15 years. For those who wish to enjoy it sooner, it’s recommended to pair this powerful red with hearty dishes like steak, beef stews, barbecued meats, or even venison to bring out the luscious fruit character and soften the tannins.
