Cellar for up to 4 years. Serve chilled. The Bread & Butter brand is best known for this lusciously creamy Chardonnay which epitomises the classic oaky California style. The estate is based in Napa Valley and makes no secret of their love of crafting big, bold wines that are ideal for drinking in any setting. The “Bread” in their name refers to their frequent use of oak barrels ageing while the “Butter” refers to the use of malolactic fermentation which creates that enticing buttery character in their delicious Chardonnays. The grapes for this bottling are sourced from two vineyards in two of California’s top appellations, Monterey and Carneros. Monterey has a long, warm growing season with plenty of fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean. This ensures the grapes achieve perfect ripeness while retaining freshness and aromatics. Carneros, on the other hand, is cooler which helps to add elegance and finesse to the finished blend. An explosion of ripe tropical fruit, toasted almonds and hints of sandalwood define the nose while the first sip reveals a powerful full body and soft, creamy texture. The oak ageing and fermentation has added seductive hints of brioche, fresh pastries and rich vanilla spice to the wine as well as a firm structure. A great wine to pair with everything from hearty salads to pan-fried fish served with a buttery sauce or even lasagna or aubergine parmigiana.

Marjan Simcic Chardonnay Cru Selection 2023 Marjan Simcic Chardonnay Cru Selection 2023 22.98 GBP Drink it now or cellar for up to 20 years. No need to decant, but best to open it half an hour before service. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious wineries in Slovenia, Marjan Simčič is a family business located in the Brda wine region, with vineyards distributed in both the Italian and Slovenian Collio. The company, founded in 1860, grows its grapes according to organic standards and produces single-varietal wines using traditional winemaking techniques. The Chardonnay grapes selected for this wine are harvested by hand from Medana Jama cru in Plešivo. Here the vines, aged between 38 and 48 years, rest on soils composed of marl, slate, and sandstone (Opoka), at an altitude of approximately 150 - 250 meters. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and in contact with the skins in large oak barrels. The wine then rests for 18 months in oak barrels and a further 2 months in the bottle. This Chardonnay has a golden color and a harmonious and fragrant bouquet of ripe fruit and candied peel. On the palate, it is juicy and concentrated, fruity and lean with a creamy touch and a marked acidity that makes it balanced and elegant. The finish is long and fresh. It is a wine of great character, which can remain in the cellar for well over a decade, but can also be enjoyed now with a roast chicken or pan-seared salmon.
J. Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay 2023 J. Lohr Riverstone Chardonnay 2023 19.64 GBP Enjoy it now, or hold for a few more years. No need to decant before serving. The “J” in J. Lohr Estates stands for Jerry, the founder and pioneer who settled in California at exactly the right time. Armed with farming knowledge from rural South Dakota, Jerry Lohr’s search for a world-class terroir for viticulture led him to the Central Coast region of California. He first settled in Monterey County in the 1970s, before expanding south to Paso Robles. Nowadays, J. Lohr Estates own thousands of acres of vineyards across the two regions, as well as a small parcel of Carol's Vineyard in Napa Valley, growing a mixture of cool climate and warm climate varietals. The Riverstone Chardonnay is sourced from the former - the chilled, foggy AVA of Arroyo Seco. This wine is straw yellow in the glass, exhibiting intoxicating aromas of juicy orange, nectarine and hints of nut. 9 months of oak ageing has given this wine a wonderful round mouthfeel, with hints of oak that show up on the long finish. There are flavours of stone fruit on the palate, peach and apricot, supported by notes of honey, citrus, vanilla and cream. It’s a diverse wine for pairing with food, but it will be particularly good with white meats and white fish such as halibut.
Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2023 Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2023 40.07 GBP Cellar for up to 10 years. Serve chilled. Although today the Kumeu River winery enjoys international respect for their elegant Burgundy-style Chardonnays, behind this success lies years of backbreaking work and uncertainty. Their story began back in 1937 when Mick and Katé Brajkovich left their small village in Croatia to create a new life in New Zealand. By working long hours for other farmers in the area the couple slowly they saved up money to create their own winery in 1944 which is now in the capable hands of the third generation of Brajkovichs. Although the estate sits in one of New Zealand’s most northerly wine regions, the proximity of both the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean create cooler conditions well-suited to producing lively white wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. For their Estate Chardonnay the Brajkovich family selects and hand harvests the very best grapes from six different vineyard sites in Kumeu. They then ferment the Chardonnay in oak barrels for a total of 11 months. The result is a rich, velvety-textured Chardonnay which exudes enchanting aromas and flavours of white peaches, lemon zest, and hints of delicate minerality. This is a wine which will reward extended cellaring and it will continue to develop and evolve over the coming decade.

689 Cellars Submission Chardonnay 2023 689 Cellars Submission Chardonnay 2023 23.3 GBP Cellar for up to 7 years. Serve chilled. The creators of 689 Cellars chose the name after visiting Asia and experiencing Chinese culture where certain numbers are considered to have special lucky or auspicious characteristics. The number six, for example, is thought to represent movement or flow, empowering us to live with energy and happiness, while the number eight is linked with unlimited potential and prosperity thanks to its symmetrical shape. Finally there’s the number nine, one of the most important numbers, which is related to permanence and longevity. These lucky numbers certainly seem to have helped 689 Cellars create some truly delicious wines like this Chardonnay. Fruit for this cuvee is selected from top quality plots in Sonoma's Russian River Valley, and Napa's Carmeros and Monterey County sub-regions where conditions are ideal for growing elegant and refined Chardonnay. Once in the winery the grapes are carefully sorted and vinified with the young wine ageing in French oak barrels for 8 months before bottling. This helps to add a rich, creamy texture and seductive hints of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak to the intense tropical and stone fruit notes from the Chardonnay grapes. A great wine to share with family and friends alongside a big platter of cheeses, leafy summer salads, or roast chicken.
Capannelle Chardonnay 2023 Capannelle Chardonnay 2023 42.16 GBP Enjoy it now, or cellar for 10 years or more. No need to decant before serving. Capannelle’s Tuscan Chardonnay opens with bold scents of citrus, pear and almond, underpinned by subtle hints of slate, lavender and freshly toasted bread. This is an excellent wine for pairing with food and is crafted from 100% Chardonnay, plucked from the hills around the village of Gaiole, in the province of Siena. Capannelle’s story began in 1974, when businessman Raffaele Rossetti acquired a 16th-century villa in the heart of Chianti. In just a few years, the winery became a benchmark for quality wine in Tuscany; and it has steadily grown ever since, now encompassing over 35 hectares of vineyards. This is Capannelle’s flagship Chardonnay, a continuation of the first white wine created by the winery in 1988. On the palate, it is a perfect balance of fruit flavours and texture, crispness and cream. The grapes were matured for 10 months before release, in a combination of stainless steel vats and new oak barrels. It has a dry, sapid character, bursting with notes of pear, citrus rind, green apple skin and honey. The finish is lengthy, with slightly sweet tones that counteract the crisp acidity. Pair this wine with salmon, trout or a hearty vegetable pie.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay 2023 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay 2023 44.56 GBP Cellar for up to 9 years. Serve chilled. Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is one of Napa’s legendary producers thanks to the so-called Judgement of Paris blind tasting competition in 1976 where the estate’s 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon took first place. The winery was founded by Warren Winiarski in 1972 after he left behind an academic career to pursue winemaking, studying under Robert Mondavi. Winiarski agreed to secretly enter the very first vintage of his wine in the Paris competition. At the tasting the panel of French wine experts placed his wine ahead of many top Bordeaux chateaux including Chateau Haut-Brion and Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. As well as their magnificent Cabernet, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars also produce some stunning Chardonnay like this elegant example which is named after the Greek word for “graceful”. Fruit is sourced from selected cool climate vineyards in southern Napa Valley with the must fermented in oak barrels to add a creamy texture and plenty of polish. The young wine is then matured on the lees for 8 months in 30% new oak French barrels. The result is a light and refined Chardonnay with ripe stone fruit and citrus flavours carefully balanced by soft tannins, a generous medium body, and hints of spice on the long finish. There’s notes of pear, honeydew melon and hazelnut on the palate with a persistent freshness which makes this a great match for grilled salmon, roast chicken, or leafy summer salads with feta or halloumi.
Thaya Apri Chardonnay 2023 Thaya Apri Chardonnay 2023 24.83 GBP Drink it now or cellar for up to 15 years. No need to decant, but best to open it half an hour before the service. The grapes are grown in the company vineyards which extend over approximately 105 hectares located in various villages, near the Podyjí National Park, in the South Moravia region. Here the climatic and soil conditions are particularly favorable for quality viticulture and in fact, the vine has been present since the times of the ancient Romans. The Apri range of wines is the company's most prestigious. The label features a wild boar, a symbol of strength and wild character. The Chardonnay grapes come from the company's Hnanice and U Chlupa vineyards. Fermentation takes place in 400-liter oak barrels, where the wine is then refined. Chardonnay Apri is a wine with a warm and intense color with golden tones and straw yellow reflections. Lingua Franca Estate Chardonnay 2023 Lingua Franca Estate Chardonnay 2023 75.71 GBP Drink it now or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant. Founded in 2012 by Larry Stone, a renowned American sommelier, Lingua Franca Winery is located in the Eola-Amity Hills of the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Here, the volcanic rock soils and the unique microclimate influenced by the Pacific Ocean favor quality viticulture. Today, Larry Stone is joined in his work by Dominique Lafon and Thomas Savre, and together they produce excellent premium wines according to the principles of organic and biodynamic farming. The Chardonnay grapes come mostly from plots planted by Larry Stone in 2012 and from two additional blocks. After hand-selecting and harvesting the fruit, 80% of the harvest is whole-cluster pressed, and fermentation occurs spontaneously in barrels. The finished wine then ages for 11 months on the lees before being blended and aged for another 5 months on the lees in a tank. The result is a lively and brilliant wine that reveals notes of green apple, jasmine, gardenia, lemon custard, and grapefruit zest on the nose. On the palate, it is rounded and velvety, with a creamy texture and a fresh character. The fruit for this single vineyard Chardonnay is sourced from just 27 rows in the family’s legendary Adrianna Vineyard which sits at 1450 metres above sea level in Gualtallary in the Uco Valley. Once in the winery the must is fermented in French oak barrels and then aged in the barrel for 12 to 16 months depending on the vintage. Sea Sun by Caymus Chardonnay 2023 Sea Sun by Caymus Chardonnay 2023 30.04 GBP Cellar for 4-5 years. No need to decant it. Sea Sun wines are produced by Charlie Wagner, whose family has a long winemaking tradition. And in 1972, his father and grandparents founded Caymus Vineyards, one of the oldest operating wineries in Napa Valley. The grapes come from vineyards in the coastal counties of Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Solano, where the cool ocean breezes and a prolonged ripening season lead to greater complexity in the wine. The subtle differences between the pedoclimatic characteristics of the various regions result in an interesting variety of aromas and flavors. This elegant Californian wine is characterized by the varietal fruitiness of the Chardonnay, with perfectly integrated acidity and delicate oak tones. On the nose, ripe pears meet delicious apples and mango with hints of buttery and toasted caramel that transport pleasantly throughout the medium body with a round and creamy mouth sensation. Founded in 2016 in Chorey-les-Beaune, the Petit Roy winery is owned by Seiichi Saito, a Chinese winemaker who grew up in Japan. After years of experience working at various French estates and opening the La Lune restaurant in Beaune, he decided to start his own winery with just over two hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards. Production is limited, but Petit Roy wines have already achieved great success with the public and critics. The Chardonnay grapes come from vineyards cultivated using a biodynamic approach, fully respecting natural cycles and the terroir. Harvesting is done manually, and after fermentation, the finished wine rests in used barrels to reflect the varietal characteristics and ensure the production of expressive and balanced wines. In the glass, Petit-Roy Bourgogne Chardonnay reveals a bright, luminous color with golden hues and subtle greenish highlights. On the nose, it displays a fresh and fragrant character with aromas of white fruit and citrus, followed by floral notes on a mineral undertone. On the palate, it is savory and round, juicy and balanced, with a well-balanced acidity and a long, delicately savory finish. This white wine can age well for several years, but can already be enjoyed now with poultry and roasted fish.

Felsina I Sistri Chardonnay 2023 Felsina I Sistri Chardonnay 2023 26.2 GBP Cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant before serving. Although the Felsina estate is best known for their legendary Chianti Classico red wines made with the traditional local Sangiovese grape, they have been producing this refined Chardonnay ever since the first vintage in 1987. The result of years of experimentation and research, the vines that produce these Chardonnay grapes are grafts from French clones that were planted on an area of the Felsina estate close to the Ombrone river. Each harvest the grapes are carefully picked and selected by hand before being pressed and fermented in French oak barrels. The wine is then matured in the barrel for a year on the lees and undergoes daily battonage to help create a rich, creamy texture and complex flavour profile. When the maturation period is complete the wine is bottled and rested for at least three months before it is deemed ready for release. The result is a deeply-coloured white wine with enchanting aromas of white peach, mango and vanilla. The first sip reveals a full body, firm structure and intense tropical fruit aromas along with hints of sweet baking spice balanced by a fresh acidity. The rich, buttery character of this Chardonnay makes it an ideal match for risottos, chicken served in a creamy sauce or hard cheeses.
Jordan Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2023 Jordan Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2023 19.49 GBP Cellar for up to 5 years. Serve chilled. This elegant Chardonnay is made by one of Stellenbosch’s top winemaking families, the Jordans, who have been working this three-hundred year old estate since 1982 when it was purchased by Ted and Sheelagh. The couple’s son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Cathy, took over the running of the winery in 1993 after spending several years working internationally to learn the winemaking trade. Their Barrel Fermented Chardonnay is made in a style that honours both Burgundian winemaking heritage and the unique characteristics of the Jordan estate. The winery is set in the ravine of Stellenbosch Kloof which benefits from cooling breezes and mists from nearby False Bay. The Chardonnay grapes used for this bottling are sourced from the cooler east and south-facing slopes where conditions help to preserve freshness and a delicate aromatic character in the finished wine. To enhance the natural beauty of their Chardonnay grapes, the Jordans ferment the must in oak barrels and then mature the wine on the lees in the barrel for 9 months. This helps to create a rich and creamy Chardonnay where fresh lemon, grapefruit and tropical notes mingle harmoniously with hints of butter, pastries, and sweet almonds. The well-rounded texture and intense character of this wine make it an ideal match for richer dishes like risottos or chicken in a creamy sauce.
Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2023 Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2023 33.86 GBP Drink it now or cellar for up to 8 years. No need to decant. Founded in 1973 in Sonoma County, California, Sonoma-Cutrer owns approximately 1,121 acres of vineyards spread across the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations, farmed using sustainable practices. The Chardonnay grapes are sourced from four select parcels of the finest estate vineyards and select growers in the Sonoma Coast appellation. The Sonoma Coast wine district is blessed with particularly favorable climate conditions for Chardonnay production, with cool afternoon breezes from the Pacific, and good nighttime temperature ranges. After the harvest, which is done in the early hours of the morning to preserve the freshness of the grapes, fermentation takes place in a mix of oak and steel barrels, and the finished wine is then aged on the lees in oak barrels (14% of which is new) for approximately 8 months. In the glass, the wine reveals an intense straw-yellow color and a broad and elegant aromatic profile with notes of stone fruit, pear, pineapple and apple blossom, quince, and delicate hints of sweet spices. On the palate, it is soft, ripe, and juicy with a bright acidity and a good fruit concentration. It is balanced and lively with a long and slightly spicy finish. Try it as an aperitif, with crab or roast chicken.
Domaine Nathalie & Gilles Fevre Bourgogne Chardonnay 2023 Domaine Nathalie & Gilles Fevre Bourgogne Chardonnay 2023 22.24 GBP Cellar for up to 5 years. Serve chilled. Nathalie and Gilles met when they were both studying enology in Dijon. Many years later they continue to make fantastic Chablis wines alongside their daughter Julie who also trained as an enologist. The whole Fevre family are passionate advocates both for Chablis and for the environment. They use sustainable methods wherever possible in their vineyards and vinify with small stainless steel tanks which allow them to vinify each individual plot separately. This classic white Bourgogne is a great introduction to the Fevre house style which typically shows off the character of both the Chardonnay grape and the terroir. Grapes are grown on rich clay soils on a specific 1.65 hectare plot of the Fevre family vineyards in the village of Fontenay-Près-Chablis. After careful handling the young wine is aged on the lees in stainless steel tanks. In the glass you’ll immediately notice the delicate aromatics of spring orchard blossom and toasted almonds followed by hints of green apple, zingy citrus, and fresh pair. On the palate there’s a refreshing acidity paired with a light body and smooth texture thanks to the lees ageing. The combination of freshness and aromatics makes it a great match for roast chicken, lobster dishes, or a rich seafood pasta.
