The grapes for this bottling are sourced from two vineyards in two of California’s top appellations, Monterey and Carneros. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious wineries in Slovenia, Marjan Simčič is a family business located in the Brda wine region, with vineyards distributed in both the Italian and Slovenian Collio. The company, founded in 1860, grows its grapes according to organic standards and produces single-varietal wines using traditional winemaking techniques. The Chardonnay grapes selected for this wine are harvested by hand from Medana Jama cru in Plešivo. Here the vines, aged between 38 and 48 years, rest on soils composed of marl, slate, and sandstone (Opoka), at an altitude of approximately 150 - 250 meters. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and in contact with the skins in large oak barrels. The wine then rests for 18 months in oak barrels and a further 2 months in the bottle. This Chardonnay has a golden color and a harmonious and fragrant bouquet of ripe fruit and candied peel. On the palate, it is juicy and concentrated, fruity and lean with a creamy touch and a marked acidity that makes it balanced and elegant. The finish is long and fresh. It is a wine of great character, which can remain in the cellar for well over a decade, but can also be enjoyed now with a roast chicken or pan-seared salmon.

Armed with farming knowledge from rural South Dakota, Jerry Lohr’s search for a world-class terroir for viticulture led him to the Central Coast region of California. He first settled in Monterey County in the 1970s, before expanding south to Paso Robles. Nowadays, J. Lohr Estates own thousands of acres of vineyards across the two regions, as well as a small parcel of Carol's Vineyard in Napa Valley, growing a mixture of cool climate and warm climate varietals. The Riverstone Chardonnay is sourced from the former - the chilled, foggy AVA of Arroyo Seco. This wine is straw yellow in the glass, exhibiting intoxicating aromas of juicy orange, nectarine and hints of nut. 9 months of oak ageing has given this wine a wonderful round mouthfeel, with hints of oak that show up on the long finish. There are flavours of stone fruit on the palate, peach and apricot, supported by notes of honey, citrus, vanilla and cream. It’s a diverse wine for pairing with food, but it will be particularly good with white meats and white fish such as halibut.

Although today the Kumeu River winery enjoys international respect for their elegant Burgundy-style Chardonnays, behind this success lies years of backbreaking work and uncertainty. Their story began back in 1937 when Mick and Katé Brajkovich left their small village in Croatia to create a new life in New Zealand. By working long hours for other farmers in the area the couple slowly they saved up money to create their own winery in 1944 which is now in the capable hands of the third generation of Brajkovichs. Although the estate sits in one of New Zealand’s most northerly wine regions, the proximity of both the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean create cooler conditions well-suited to producing lively white wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. For their Estate Chardonnay the Brajkovich family selects and hand harvests the very best grapes from six different vineyard sites in Kumeu. They then ferment the Chardonnay in oak barrels for a total of 11 months. The result is a rich, velvety-textured Chardonnay which exudes enchanting aromas and flavours of white peaches, lemon zest, and hints of delicate minerality. This is a wine which will reward extended cellaring and it will continue to develop and evolve over the coming decade.

The winery was founded by Warren Winiarski in 1972 after he left behind an academic career to pursue winemaking, studying under Robert Mondavi. Winiarski agreed to secretly enter the very first vintage of his wine in the Paris competition. The young wine is then matured on the lees for 8 months in 30% new oak French barrels. Although the Felsina estate is best known for their legendary Chianti Classico red wines made with the traditional local Sangiovese grape, they have been producing this refined Chardonnay ever since the first vintage in 1987. The result of years of experimentation and research, the vines that produce these Chardonnay grapes are grafts from French clones that were planted on an area of the Felsina estate close to the Ombrone river. Each harvest the grapes are carefully picked and selected by hand before being pressed and fermented in French oak barrels. The wine is then matured in the barrel for a year on the lees and undergoes daily battonage to help create a rich, creamy texture and complex flavour profile. When the maturation period is complete the wine is bottled and rested for at least three months before it is deemed ready for release. This classic white Bourgogne is a great introduction to the Fevre house style which typically shows off the character of both the Chardonnay grape and the terroir. Grapes are grown on rich clay soils on a specific 1.65 hectare plot of the Fevre family vineyards in the village of Fontenay-Près-Chablis. After careful handling the young wine is aged on the lees in stainless steel tanks.
