Today Cloudy Bay enjoys a reputation for being New Zealand’s most famous producer of Sauvignon Blanc thanks to the vision and foresight of founder David Hohnen. David recognised the potential of the Marlborough wine region and established Cloudy Bay in 1985 as one of the area’s very first wineries. The property takes its name from the nearby coast which helps give the Cloudy Bay Sauvignon its characteristic freshness and perfectly-poised balance thanks to cooling sea breezes during the warm summer growing season. The fruit for this iconic wine is sourced from 91 vineyard parcels in the Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick and Brancott subregions of the Wairau Valley. Once in the winery it is carefully vinified with minimal intervention to allow the telltale personality of the terroir and the grape shine through. Each parcel is kept separate throughout the winemaking process to give the winemaking team maximum control over the final blending. In 1985, the pioneering spirit brought founder David Hohnen and winemaker Kevin Judd to Marlborough, where they produced an aromatic and bold Sauvignon Blanc. Cloudy Bay was one of Marlborough's top five wineries and quickly gained worldwide fame as a recognized producer of New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc. Since then, the company has continued to expand with an excellent range of products. Most of the vineyards are planted with New Zealand's successful grape variety, Sauvignon Blanc. There are also Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as some Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Cloudy Bay is named after Captain Thoas Cook, who sailed into the misty bay at the eastern end of the Wairau Valley on his voyage of discovery in 1770. Cloudy Bay Chardonnay is produced exclusively with Chardonnay grapes, sourced from four vineyards located in separate sub-regions, Brancott, Fairhall, Ben Morven and Central Wairau ValleyMix, on draining gravel and clay-based soils. A great choice for Pinot lovers looking for something a little bit different, Domaine Nico is a relatively new project set up by Laura Catena who comes from Argentina’s most famous winemaking family. The winery is pioneering high altitude Pinot Noir, a grape that Laura first fell in love with while on a trip to France as a teenager. Grapes are planted at between 1120 to 1500 metres above sea level, ensuring plenty of warm sunshine as well as cooler nights to preserve plenty of freshness and aromatics in the fruit. “La Savante” was created to honour female scholars, and Laura carefully selects the grapes that go into this cuvee from small parcels that are microvinified in 15 different lots using wild yeasts. This gives her maximum control over the final blend which is then aged in French oak for 18 months. Enticing hints of raspberry, red cherry and redcurrant immediately spring out of the glass followed by undertones of cedar, fresh mint, and dried violets. The first sip reveals a bright acidity, medium body and a solid core of ripe berry fruit which lingers on the tongue. It’s a great match for charcuterie, red meat dishes, or tomato-based pastas.

Lingua Franca is an American winery located in the heart of the extraordinary Eola-Amity Hills wine region in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The winery, acquired in 2012 by Larry Stone, in partnership with renowned viticulturist Dominique Lafon and winemaker Thomas Savre, is now part of the Constellation brands. Lingua Franca produces high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, following low-impact, organic, and biodynamic farming principles. Founded in 1700, the Movia estate has been owned by the Kristančič family since 1820 and is made up of 18 hectares of vines which are partly located on the other side of the border in Italy. The winery is located in the Goriška Brda region in western Slovenian which is blessed with a balmy Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers cooled by sea breezes and mild winters. These conditions are ideal for premium winemaking and the family produces delicious wines from both local and international grape varieties. This Pinot Noir is one of Movia’s flagship wines and is crafted from 30 year old vines which are farmed organically, harvested late and picked by hand to ensure optimum maturity and quality. The must is then fermented using wild yeasts and macerated for up to 4 weeks to capture the full expression of this noble grape variety. The young wine is then matured on the lees in oak barrels until it is deemed ready for bottling. Felton Road was founded by Stewart Elms in the 1990s who realised the potential of Central Otago’s cool climate for making exceptional Burgundian style wines. In recent years it has been taken over by English-born owner Nigel Greening who declares himself a “Pinot Noir addict”. Working with winemaker Blair Walter who honed his skills in Burgundy and Oregon, Greening has established Felton Road as a benchmark New Zealand producer, creating wines with the verve and polish to rival many of Burgundy’s finest. The Bannockburn Pinot is crafted from four estate vineyards, Cornish Point, Calvert, MacMuir and The Elms, set on temperate north-facing slopes. All of the vineyards are farmed biodynamically under the strict Demeter certification. Once in the winery the grapes are vinified using minimal intervention methods and are matured in French oak barrels for 22 months. Bright cherry and plum notes are the first to leap out of the glass followed by deeper notes of savoury dried herbs, leather and baked earth. It is an excellent showcase of France’s premier Pinot Noir region, using grapes sourced from three separate parcels, from estate-owned vineyards in Pommard and Volnay. Domaine A.F. Gros is a small-scale family winery, created in 1988 when the Gros family split the estate. This branch was taken over by Anne-Francoise, a renowned winemaker, who handed over the reins to her children in 2019. It is one of three Gros-owned estates founded in Vosne-Romanee, spanning 11 hectares in some of Burgundy’s finest appellations, such as Pommard, Volnay, and Beaujolais. This is a silky, light- to medium-bodied affair, with a hint of that famed Pommard attack and sharp flavours of cherry, raspberry, and cranberry, supported by crisp acidity. Before release, the wine spent 12 months ageing in oak barrels. It is made for enjoying in its youth and inherits a vibrant energy from the calcareous soils where it was grown. Paton started out as a dairy farmer, but in 1980 he had a dramatic career change and began to explore Marlborough’s viticultural potential. Despite a lack of winemaking experience, Paton had read a scientific study comparing Marlborough’s terroir to that found in Burgundy and he set out to learn how to make top quality wines here. Over the intervening years Paton has honed his winemaking skills to produce sensational Pinot Noir with a worldwide cult following. The very first owner of the Meerlust estate, a German immigrant Henning Huising who settled there in 1693, named the property “pleasure of the sea” after its stunning location on a granite outcrop just 5km from False Bay. Today it is run by Hannes Myburgh, the eighth generation of the family to work the estate since they purchased it in 1756. Blessed with cooling ocean breezes and fogs which help moderate the hot summers, the property is located just 15km from Stellenbosch with 110 hectares planted with Bordeaux varietals and some Pinot Noir. Although the region isn’t well-known for Pinot, this example is made from three clones planted at the top of a hill where conditions are ideal for making elegant, Old World-style Pinot Noir. In the glass there’s an attractive vibrant ruby hue and gentle hints of floral perfume, dark berries, and wild mushrooms. The first sip reveals plenty of ripe red cherry, fine tannins, and a pure, clean finish with a lingering bright streak of acidity. Chateau Purcari is a Moldovan winery of immense stature, with a deep wine-making history and hundreds of medals earned at international contests. The winery’s name is synonymous with the region itself, nestled in Moldova’s southeastern region near the Ukrainian border. Purcari was granted the status of the first specialised winery in Bessarabia, now Moldova, in 1827, but its history goes even further back than that. As early as the 1700s, French settlers recognised that Purcari’s soils were curiously similar to Bordeaux’s. For that reason, Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec are still the predominant grapes at Purcari, but the Burgundian Pinot Noir is also planted here. Jardin d'Eden is a youthful Alsatian Pinot Noir produced with select grapes in the single Vogelgarten vineyard, at about 250 meters above sea level in the village of Sigolsheim.
