David recognised the potential of the Marlborough wine region and established Cloudy Bay in 1985 as one of the area’s very first wineries. The property takes its name from the nearby coast which helps give the Cloudy Bay Sauvignon its characteristic freshness and perfectly-poised balance thanks to cooling sea breezes during the warm summer growing season. The fruit for this iconic wine is sourced from 91 vineyard parcels in the Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick and Brancott subregions of the Wairau Valley. The estate was founded in the 1960s by Min Zorzettig, but it wasn’t until the 1990s that his grandchildren decided to totally renovate the winery and replant the vineyards to focus on quality production rather than quantity. Yields have been reduced, their 70 hectares of vines are worked by hand, and they use indigenous yeasts for fermentation. This vibrant Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from their terraced vineyards which act as a sun trap in the summer months, helping to fully ripen the fruit. The soils here are a unique blend of marl and sandstone which is known locally as “ponca” and gives the wines a notable freshness and elegance. Just like its creator, this wine has an easy-going, fun-loving character which is why David and his wife Pip often pull it out when they throw one of their huge summer barbecues at Black Cottage. This philosophy of making wines that celebrate life was born after David had spent years making wines in Chile, France and the USA and finally decided to pursue his dream of returning home to create his own unique project. Friends encouraged him to name the winery Black Cottage, feeling that the humble house on the property where the couple live and frequently host friends was the perfect symbol for his delicious, accessible wines. Today the project continues to blossom and expand with David exploring vineyard sites in Wairau and Awatere with ever more challenging microclimates to push the boundaries of his winemaking to the next level.
