Markus Huber's winery is one of the most renowned in Austria, with award-winning wines exported all over the world. The estate extends over approximately 50 hectares of vineyards where the most cultivated variety is Gruner Veltliner, Austrian flagship grape. The Gruner Veltliner grapes come from the Alte Setz vineyard, with an eastern exposure and a soil made of deep loess located above the conglomerate of the Hollenburg-Karlstetten formation, made up of limestone and dolomite boulders deposited approximately 15 million years ago. The soil and the vines, which are more than 60 years old, guarantee the production of high-quality grapes. Fermentation takes place half in large acacia barrels and half in steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The finished wine is then left to rest for 5 months on the yeasts. This elegant Gruner Veltliner has a yellow color with greenish shades. On the nose, it reveals aromas of yellow apple, stone fruit, and spices, followed by hints of tropical fruit. On the palate, it is fresh and vibrant, juicy and fruity. It is a complex wine with a long aftertaste and excellent aging potential. It works well with blue cheeses and Asian food.

Markus Huber is one of Austria’s leading young winemakers and was recently named “Falstaff Winemaker of the Year” at the awards ceremony that is considered to be the Oscars of the Austrian wine industry. His eponymous winery is set in the Traisental Valley, Austria’s smallest winegrowing region which is famous for its full-bodied Gruner Veltliner and Riesling wines. Markus’ Berg Gruner Veltliner is an “Erste Lage” or “first-class site” wine, the classification which is given to selected vineyards in recognition of their exceptional terroir. This particular vineyard is planted on terraces on a very steep slope with a 25% gradient. The soil here has very little organic matter, forcing the vines to struggle to get enough nutrients which helps to produce very concentrated and aromatic grapes. After harvest these grapes are carefully transported to the winery and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in acacia wood barrels for 8 months on the lees, a process which helps to add more body and a creamy texture. The result is an intense, full-bodied Gruner with plenty of the classic spicy varietal character along with hints of bright citrus and stone fruit. The bold flavour profile makes it a great white to pair with tricky ingredients like asparagus as well as spicy Asian curries and salads.

The Gruner Veltliner grapes are harvested manually from the terraced Hochrain vineyard located at approximately 215-290 m above sea level between St Michael and Wösendorf, on paragneiss soils with a sandy loess bottom. Fermentation takes place in steel at a controlled temperature and the finished wine ages on the lees. The wine reveals an intense and fresh aromatic profile with notes of yellow fruit, bergamot, and dried herbs. On the palate, it is dry and lean, with a vibrant acidity and an almost creamy structure. It is rich and fruity with a long and persistent finish that recalls hints of pepper. It works great with many vegetarian dishes, but it's an absolute must-try with an asparagus and gruyere quiche.
