Drink now or cellar for up to 20 years. No need to decant before serving. Regarded as one of Rioja’s finest traditional-style producers, La Rioja Alta was founded in 1890 out of a partnership of five local growers who wanted to promote their quality-driven Rioja wines to the wider European market. To that end the winery was headquartered next to the Haro railway station, enabling them to easily export their wines to nearby France and beyond. Today they own 300 hectares of vineyards in top locations spread across Rioja Alta which are farmed organically with a strong focus on quality and tradition. In 1904 La Rioja Alta absorbed Bodegas Ardanza, a pivotal moment which is referenced in this Vina Ardanza Reserva bottling. It’s predominantly composed of Tempranillo sourced from 30 year old vines on the estate’s Cuesta and Montecillo vineyards, along with a small proportion of Garnacha from the La Pedriza vineyard in Tudelilla. The grapes are all harvested manually and fermented spontaneously before the young wine is transferred to American oak barrels for 36 months for the Tempranillo and 30 months for the Garnacha. This lengthy ageing process gives this wine a typical old school Rioja flavour profile with gentle red fruit flavours complemented by toasted oak, sweet spice and plenty of rich vanilla notes. The soft, ripe tannins, medium body, and long finish make this a great match for hearty beef dishes, barbecued ribs, or even earthy game like venison.

La Rioja Alta Torre de Ona Martelo Rioja Reserva 2019
30.44 GBP
Cellar for up to 15 years. Decant 1 hour before serving. La Rioja Alta is focused on expressing the pure terroir of the best sites in Rioja’s Alavesa zone. The project was established in 1995 and has since bolstered its focus by closely studying and subdividing the vineyards based on expression, and then choosing to separately vinify all parcels. In part, this where the brand diverges into a few lines, this one representing the Torre de Ona winery. Great weather in 2015 vintage yielded near perfect conditions for ripening the estate grapes. The exceptional fruit quality lends to long-term aging of this bottle. It presents garnet red with medium-high intensity, aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum followed by clove, white pepper, anise and cedar. It has a full mouthfeel though still fresh and bright, and carries a long finish. This bold wine will pair well with anything creamy or fatty to balance its tannice structure. Drink it with unctuous aged cheese, charcoal grilled vegetables and marbled meats or a hearty game stew.

The wine is crafted from 100% Tempranillo grapes and is aged for 12 months in oak barrels before bottling for extra polish and complexity. One standout feature of the Aster Reserva is its delicate balance between ripe fruit and tannin. The tannins are well-integrated, providing structure to the wine without overpowering the fruit flavors. On the palate, Aster Reserva is full-bodied and complex, with flavors of luscious blackberry, cherry, and toasted spices. This makes it a versatile wine that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with a wide range of dishes including grilled red meats, hearty stews, and aged hard cheeses.

La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 890 2011
209.92 GBP
Drink now or cellar for up to 24 years. Decant 1 hour before serving. One of Rioja’s finest producers for traditional-style reds, the story of La Rioja Alta begins back in 1890 when five local winemaking families decided to join forces to start exporting their quality-driven wines beyond the Spanish borders. The new winery was located right by the Haro train station which enabled them to quickly expand their sales into neighbouring France. Today the estate has grown to 300 hectares of vineyards spread across the Rioja Alta region, but still retains that early commitment to excellence and celebrating local winemaking traditions. Their Gran Reserva 890 is La Rioja Alta’s flagship wine and commemorates the foundation date of the winery. The cuvee is predominantly Tempranillo from estate vineyards in Briñas, Villalba, and Labastida, along with a tiny drop of Mazuelo and Graciano. Grapes for this bottling are carefully selected in the vineyard in small refrigerated boxes and carefully vinified in temperature-controlled tanks. The winemakers then select only the best of the young wines to be aged for 6 years in American oak barrels which La Rioja Alta makes themselves in their own cooperage. The final blend is then chosen and the wine is bottled ready for release. This painstaking attention to detail and extensive maturation helps to produce an immensely ageworthy Rioja with firm tannins, a robust structure and intense layers of luscious dark fruit, spices, baked earth and leather. Ideal for cellaring for another decade or two, although it can also be enjoyed now with hearty red meat dishes.
La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva Vina Arana 2017
35.79 GBP
Cellar for up to 11 years. Decant 1 hour before serving. La Rioja Alta was founded in 1890 by five local families including the Aranas, Ardanzas and the Alberdis whose names still feature on many of the winery’s most celebrated cuvees. The families headquartered their new winery right by the train station in Haro, enabling them to start exporting significant quantities of their quality-driven wines to France and beyond. Their Vina Alberdi Gran Reserva is crafted almost exclusively from Tempranillo grapes from the estate’s Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas vineyards along with a tiny drop of Graciano from their Montecillo estate. The grapes are all carefully harvested in small boxes and fermented in tanks over a lengthy period. The young wine is then aged in American oak barrels which La Rioja Alta makes in their own cooperage for three years. The final stage is the blending when La Rioja Alta’s winemakers taste through all the barrels and select the composition of the cuvee. The result is a very smooth and approachable red which can be drunk with great pleasure even when young. Enticing notes of crushed strawberries, bright red cherries and leather define the nose along with undertones of tomato and spice from the oak. On the palate there are smooth, refined tannins complemented by a medium body, punchy mid-palate and long finish.

La Rioja Alta Lagar de Cervera Albarino 2024
17.03 GBP
Drink it now. No need to decant it. In 1890, 5 Basque winemakers, born in the lands of Rioja, in the north of Spain, founded the 'Sociedad Vinícola de la Rioja Alta' in Haro. From the beginning they had the ambition to produce elite wines, and at the end of the 19th century they decided to recruit a French winemaker: Alfonso Vigier. At the time, only the most prestigious estates could recruit such wine experts. For decades the oak barrels were made on site, then they ceased this activity for several years and then resumed it in 2003. The company has largely contributed to the world fame of Rioja wines. This wine is aged on the lees for several months, to give it roundness and complexity. In the glass, Lagar de Cervera Albarino shows a beautiful golden color. The nose develops a superb purity of fresh fruit centered on citrus, candied ginger and white flowers. On the palate, it is fresh, lively and crispy. The iodized and smoky notes present themselves with a well-established tropical framework. There is a nice balance and a pungent finish. This is a wonder of Spanish white wine, an absolute benchmark for the great whites of Galicia. A model of purity and aromatic expression! It works beautifully with shellfish, white meat, poultry, and vegetarian risottos.
La Rioja Alta Aster El Espino 2021
35 GBP
Cellar for up to 10 years. Decant for an hour or more before serving. El Espino is a top-class Spanish red wine, harvested from old vines in Anguilla, a town within the Ribera del Duero DOC. It is made solely from Tempranillo and opens with a sumptuous bouquet of blue and black berries, star anise, minerality, and oak-infused hints of coffee, cigar smoke, and cocoa. The Aster winery has been making wine in the province of Burgos for six generations, and well over 100 years. The fruits for El Espino were harvested from an area of 95 hectares, where the vines grow in clayish soils at 780 metres above sea level. The vines were planted in 1991, after years of soil testing and consulting with local growers, to find the perfect location for Tempranillo. In the mouth, El Espino represents a fresh, youthful take on Tinto Fino, with strong notes of blueberry, plum, and blackberry. In the background, you can detect hints of toffee and spice. Good levels of acidity bring a remarkable vibrancy, and its finely-grained, slightly sweet tannins persist into the long finish. Before bottling, it was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Consider pairing it with roast chicken, tomato pasta, or a tuna steak.
La Rioja Alta Aster Finca El Otero 2021
48.41 GBP
Drink now or cellar for up to 11 years. Decant 1 hour before serving. La Rioja Alta winery is headquartered in Haro and has made exceptional traditional-style Rioja reds for over 130 years since its foundation in 1890. In the 1990s the estate began to explore expanding their operation into Ribera del Duero and conducted extensive research of the soil, grapes and climate of several subzones. In 1991 they finally selected the small town of Anguix for their new winery, planting vineyards on the property’s finest sites. This lively and vibrant red is crafted from 100% Tinta del Pais, the local Ribera del Duero name for Tempranillo. The vineyard sits on gentle slopes in an arid area where the poor quality soils encourage the vines to dig deep for nutrients and moisture. This helps produce intensely concentrated and deeply flavoured grapes which are harvested in the early hours of the morning to preserve their freshness and natural character. Once in the winery the grapes are soaked for 7 days and then fermented in neutral tanks. The best batches are then transferred to new French oak barrels for 62 days with regular lees stirring. The next stage is the maturation with the best barrels kept for 16 months before the final blend is decided and bottled.

Drink it now or cellar for up to 15 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Still run by their direct descendants to this day, their Vina Real winery in Rioja Alavesa is known for its fruit-forward house style backed up by a well-built structure that helps their wines evolve beautifully for decades in the cellar. Grapes for their noble Vina Real Gran Reserva are sourced from estate vineyards in San Ginés and Castejones plus additional grapes from Laguardia and Elceco. These are small plots at 500-650 metres above sea level with a mix of calcareous and sandy soils which particularly suits the Tempranillo grape. Once in the winery the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled tanks using wild yeasts followed by ageing in new oak barrels for 24 months. In the glass you’ll find an enticing bouquet of rich mocha, leather, and cigar box spice mingling with seductive crushed cassis, dark plum, and plenty of dark cherries. There’s a firm structure with smooth tannins reinforcing a medium body and a touch of refreshing acidity on the long finish. La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 2016
80.22 GBP
Cellar for up to 20 years. Decant 1 hour before serving. La Rioja Alta began life in 1890 as a collaboration between five local growers who wanted to export their wines beyond Spanish borders to new buyers in France. The new winery was established right next to the train station in Haro, enabling the rapid expansion of the estate which is now regarded as a leading producer of traditional-style Rioja reds. In 1904 the winery merged with Bodegas Ardanza, gaining some of Rioja Alta’s finest vineyards in the process. This milestone is commemorated with this Gran Reserva 904 which is predominantly made from 60 year old Tempranillo vines planted in Rodezno, Briñas, and Villalba. There’s also a small amount of Graciano from Montecillo to add grace and elegance to the finished wine. The grapes are carefully crushed once in the winery and allowed to ferment spontaneously over 75 days before being transferred to American oak barrels. After almost three years of ageing the wine is then racked eight times and the final blend is bottled the following year. It’s a graceful yet robust expression of Rioja, with ample red plum and cherry notes deepening into more savoury and earthy flavours on the palate. A great wine to cellar for a few more years or to pair with hearty fare like game, a prime steak, or beef cheeks served with creamy polenta.
Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva 2013
44.6 GBP
Drink it now or cellar for up to 30 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. The López de Heredia winery is the oldest in Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta, and one of the first three founded in the region. The project, in fact, began in 1877, from an idea of Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, an expert in the art of winemaking, who had understood the magical combination of soil and climate of Rioja ever since. Today, the company remains one of the few family-owned wineries in the region. Vina Tondonia Reserva is a Rioja wine of exceptional quality, considered one of the most prestigious ones in the region. It is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano grapes, that ages for 6 and a half years in barrique and for a further 2 years in the bottle, before being put on the market. The result is an extraordinary wine with a beautiful lively red color and great aging potential. On the nose, it reveals hints of cherry and ripe plum, and notes of vanilla, cocoa, tobacco, and undergrowth. On the palate, it is robust, balanced, and elegant. Despite its age and the time spent in wood, it is still lively and fresh. The tannins are soft and silky. The finish is long and persistent with fruity notes and spicy hints. Perfect with red meats, but absolutely worth trying with slow-cooked Lebanese lamb.

The prestigious winery, renowned for its excellent and award-winning wines, cultivates approximately 890 hectares of vineyards. The Tempranillo, Graciano, and Mazuelo grapes for the Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva are sourced from the estate's over 80-year-old vineyards and from local winemakers with whom the winery maintains a close and trusted partnership. After selection and harvest, the vinification takes place according to traditional methods, and the finished wine ages in French oak for 2.5 to 3 years before bottling and a further 3 years of maturation. In the glass, the Gran Reserva reveals an intense cherry-red color with bright purple hues. Its aromatic profile is broad and complex, with initial notes of ripe wild berries, followed by balsamic and Mediterranean herb aromas on a delicate toasted background.
