Founded in 1797, Louis Latour is a renowned family-run French winery that has been producing fine Burgundy wines for over two centuries. The estate owns approximately 50 hectares of vineyards in the most prestigious areas of the Côte d’Or (27 of which are classified as Grand Cru) and also purchases some of its grapes from trusted local growers. The winery, now run by Louis-Fabrice, the seventh generation of the family, is also a member of the prestigious Henokiens association, which brings together companies that have been continuously family-run for over 200 years. The Chardonnay grapes are sourced from a vineyard approximately 30 years old, planted on chalky, clayey soils in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation, south of Puligny-Montrachet. After manual harvesting, fermentation takes place traditionally in oak barrels, and the finished wine ages in medium-toasted French oak barrels (15% new) for 8 to 10 months. Louis Latour's Chassagne-Montrachet has a bright straw-yellow color with greenish highlights. On the nose, it reveals a fragrant aromatic profile with notes of stone fruit and yellow fruit, and hints of almond. On the palate, it is fresh and elegant, round and generous, with lively acidity and a long, persistent finish. Try it with seafood and goat cheeses.

Philippe Colin set up his winery in the industrial zone of Chassagne Montrachet where he crafts gorgeous wines from his 11.5 acres of vineyards inherited from both his father’s and his mother’s families. Robert Parker described him as “a man of few words, but that’s fine when your wines have so much to say”. Although not as well known as other Burgundian winemakers, his wines are made with meticulous attention to detail from a selection of exceptional parcels. Les Chenevottes is set on the edge of Chassagne Montrachet just across the road from the famous Le Montrachet Grand Cru. It’s a flat vineyard planted with 45-80 year old vines on heavy clay soils which retain plenty of water. Like Philippe’s other vineyards, the plot is farmed sustainably with minimal use of chemicals and regular plowing. All of the fruit is harvested by hand with the young wine aged for 12 months in a mixture of standard and larger French oak barrels. Graceful and complex, this is a fantastic example of Chassagne Montrachet with vibrant notes of white peaches, citrus, and green apples mingling with hints of toast and vanilla spice. Salt Publishing Smelling Of Rooks : Nine Years In The Norfolk Alps Salt Publishing Smelling Of Rooks : Nine Years In The Norfolk Alps 16.33 GBP From the author of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin comes a candid, comic and irresistibly companionable portrait of a writer’s life in rural Norfolk. Drawn from Louis de Bernières’s hugely popular Fac posts written between 2015 and 2024, Smelling of Rooks gathers a decade of reflections, anecdotes and observations on everything from music, cats and motorcycles to politics, parenting and the perils of social media. It is a book about the texture of ordinary days, told with the warmth, eccentricity and mischief that have made de Bernières one of Britain’s most beloved storytellers. Set against the rolling fields and modest peaks of what he calls the ‘Norfolk Alps’, this accidental memoir captures a writer at ease with his life, his readers and his absurdities. There are riffs on the pleasures of cooking and DIY, portraits of friends and neighbours, the escapades of his children, and the unpredictable joys of country living. At once funny, tender and defiantly unfiltered, Smelling of Rooks shows Louis de Bernières as he really is – reflective, unpretentious and gloriously human.A celebration of family, friendship and the small wonders of daily life, it is a book to dip into, laugh with, and treasure.
