Drink it now or cellar for up to 15 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Rutini is a line of wines produced in the Tupungato area by Bodega Rural. This winery has deep roots in the past, and its foundation dates back to the late 1800s, when Felipe Rutini, an Italian who emigrated to Argentina, created his winery in Coquimbito, a rural hamlet of the department of Maipú, in the wine region of Mendoza. Today the estate owns over four hundred hectares of vineyards, distributed in the wine-growing region of Valle de Uco, at the foot of the Andes mountain range. The altitude, between 1000 and 1500 meters above sea level, the variety of microclimates, and the nature of the land allow for the production of grapes of exceptional quality, vinified with advanced technologies, and with the utmost respect for tradition. This exquisite Argentine blend is made with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Malbec grapes. The bold character and firm structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, with the roundness and softness of Malbec, create a harmonious and balanced wine, with an intense fruit concentration and great elegance. The final wine is aged for a year in partly new and partly second-passage French barrels. Try it with braised and stewed meat.

On the nose, the wine reveals the typical intensity of Malbec with aromas of red fruits (cherry, currant), accompanied by hints of plum. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and highly concentrated. Its excellent tannic backbone reveals a resemblance to the French wines of Cahors. It is an excellent food wine. Rutini Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 Rutini Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 28.3 GBP Drink it now or cellar for up to 10 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Founded in 2008 with the construction of the winery in Tupungato, Rutini Wines is part of the Bodega Rural company. The 400 hectares of vineyards are located at an altitude that often exceeds a thousand meters, on pebbly soils of alluvial origin, with a climate characterized by dry and sunny summers, with significant day-night temperature variations. These pedoclimatic conditions favor the production of excellent-quality grapes. The Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza from Rutini's Colección line is produced with grapes from the vineyards of Gualtallary and Altamira. In the glass, the wine shows an intense ruby-red color. The aromatic profile is deep and complex, with notes of black fruit, followed by hints of cocoa, tobacco, pepper and spicy touches reminiscent of vanilla, due to the aging of 12 months in French oak. On the palate, the wine shows a good concentration of red fruit, and firm but enveloping and silky tannins that denote personality and finesse. The finish is long and persistent. It is the perfect wine for game and stewed meats, especially venison or wild boar, but it also goes very well with dishes based on Porcini mushrooms or truffles.
Michel Rolland Mariflor Malbec 2022 Michel Rolland Mariflor Malbec 2022 28.28 GBP Cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant before serving. Renowned for his work as a “flying winemaker” consulting with top wineries across the world, Michel Rolland also owns three estates in Argentina. Rolland’s love affair with the land of tango began in the late 1980s when he was invited to meet with the Etcharts whose family winery was located in northern Argentina. It wasn’t long before Rolland also founded a winery in Mendoza where his classic Mariflor Malbecs are now made. Grapes for the Mariflor Malbec are sourced from the highest estate vineyards on the Clos de los Siete property in Vista Flores which sit at 1100 metres above sea level. Conditions here are ideal for making robust and rich red wines thanks to the plentiful sunshine and large temperature difference between the day and night. This helps the grapes to ripen fully while preserving freshness and aromatics in the wine. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand in small boxes in the early morning and then sorted on arrival at the winery to maintain quality. They are then fermented in concrete tanks and the young wine ages in French oak barrels for 15 months before bottling. The result is an exuberant, fruit-forward Malbec that’s bursting with ripe cassis, plum and blackberry along with hints of cigar box spice, vanilla and dried violets.

El Enemigo Malbec 2022 El Enemigo Malbec 2022 28.3 GBP Cellar for up to 8 years. No need to decant before serving. This delicious Malbec is produced at Piedemonte al Sur in the Lujan de Cuyo sub-region of Mendoza which lies a short distance from the foothills of the magnificent Andes Mountains. The grapes for this cuvee are grown at up to 1478 metres above sea level with these high altitude conditions helping to ensure perfect ripeness and penty of aromatics and freshness in the grapes. Once in the winery the grapes are then macerated and fermented in stainless steel tanks before being left to mature for 15 months in 100 year old French oak foudres. These days the family business is headed up by the visionary Nicolas Catena and his daughter, Laura, who have collectively spent decades studying Mendoza’s high altitude vineyards. Amongst their vineyard holdings is the prestigious Adrianna Vineyard in the Uco Valley, the highest altitude sub-region in Mendoza, where top quality Malbec vines are planted 1450 metres above sea level. In 1989 the Klein family took over the property and have embarked on an ambitious modernisation program with a strong focus on sustainability. This powerful Cabernet is crafted from top quality fruit from hillside vineyards in Alexander Valley which Rodney Strong identified as the ideal terroir for the variety as early as 1971. The combination of elevation and gentle slopes helps to craft richly-fruited wines with plenty of freshness and a distinctive aromatic character. On the nose there are enticing notes of crushed dark berries, cherries and forest floor notes while the palate offers a full body, firm tannins and elegant structure. The nose offers up ripe dark fruit such as blackberry and cherry, while subtle spice and vanilla intermingle very well. The palate explodes with blackcurrant, ripe black cherry, with layers of vanilla, chocolate and tobacco notes adding a different dimension to the wine. This is a full bodied wine has rich tannins that are balanced by great acid, alcohol and layers of ripe fruit. The finish is long, powerful and lingering ending with a eucalyptus note. Fantastic wine in anyone’s book. Fantastic on its own but even better with a joint of beef, venison, game, hoi sin ribs and sausages. Caymus Vineyards are renowned for their superb Cabernet Sauvignon (amongst other things) and they have developed new techniques that add richness, flavour and characteristics that can’t otherwise be achieved. Known as “hang time”, the grapes are left unusually long on the vine – even risking the crop in the event of an early winter. This technique helps to increase colour, mature the tannins in the wine and develop rich and deep seated flavours, textures and complexity in the wines. Other vineyard management techniques used include crop thinning, thus allowing more sunlight to get to the grapes, and delayed harvest to allow ultimate ripening allows Caymus to produce superb, ultra premium wines.

Located in Millahue, in Chile's Cachapoal Valley, the VIK estate was founded in 2004 by the Viks and today encompasses approximately 270 hectares of vineyards. Far Niente Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 Far Niente Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 88.66 GBP Cellar for up to 20 years. Decant 1 hour before serving. Bella Union was founded by the owners of the legendary Far Niente winery to showcase the complex art of blending Napa Cabernet with other classic Bordeaux varietals. At the heart of their holdings is a prized 25-acre vineyard in Rutherford which is located along a country road called Bella Oaks Lane which used to be known as Bella Union. This vineyard is mainly planted with 20-30 year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines on well-draining loamy soils. In addition, the winemakers add some Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from selected Napa vineyards to create a complex Bordeaux-style blend which is, as the winery’s name suggests, a truly beautiful union. Briar fruit, black cherry and berry compote notes dominate on the nose, while the first sip reveals a robust full body, firm tannins, and opulent dark fruit core. The bold dark fruit and solid structure make this a great wine to pair with hearty dishes like barbecued ribs, a ribeye steak, beef stews, and rich moussaka or lasagnes. It can also be kept in the cellar for a decade or more where the tannins will soften further and the wine will become even more complex.

Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 149.42 GBP Cellar for up to 25 years. Decant 2 hours before serving. Far Niente, meaning “without a care” in Italian, was originally founded in 1885 by gold rush veteran John Benson who enlisted the help of architect Hamden McIntyre to build the grand old stone winery. During Prohibition the estate was abandoned, and it was only in 1979 that the new owners Gil and Beth Nickel restored it to its former glory. Today the estate boasts 200 acres of prime vineyards across the Napa Valley. This magnificent Cabernet is regarded as one of Napa’s finest. Fruit is primarily sourced from the revered Martin Stelling vineyard located behind the winery in Oakville. This plot is blessed with exceptional gravel and loam soils which help to produce elegant, refined wines with fantastic tannins. The fruit is carefully sorted in the winery so only the best fruit is used. After vinification the young wine is aged in mostly new French oak barrels for 17 months in the historic Far Niente stone cellars. The result is a plush, concentrated Cabernet that’s bursting with succulent cassis, blackberries, dark plums, and hints of star anise and bitter chocolate. There’s a robust full body, firm tannins, and solid core of dark fruit on the palate, culminating in a long, harmonious finish seasoned with cigar box spice and cedar notes.
